The Dalmore has long been considered one of the premier whisky brands in Scotland. Their whiskies are finely crafted and matured in a combination of American white oak barrels and most frequently, Oloroso Sherry barrels. These barrels have been exclusively sourced from the Gonzalez Byass winery in Jerez, Spain for well over 100 years. However, this particular Scotch sees a period of finishing in formerly used Tawny Port pipes. Where Oloroso Sherry is a dry wine, Tawny Ports are quite sweet. This different finish adds a very different flavour profile to the spirit. The Dalmore Port Wood Reserve is loaded with flavours and aromas of sweet red berries, blood oranges, ripe plums, sticky toffee, caramel, and a nutty aroma similar to roasted chestnuts, coffee, raisin and sweet cherries. It is bottled slightly overproof and sits at a weightier 46.5% ABV, creating a richer, warmer, and heartier mouthfeel to the spirit and adding a touch of length to the finish. This is truly a whisky that every aficionado should have on hand!
The Dalmore has an incredibly rich history to go along with the richly flavoured scotch that they have been producing for over 150 years. It was in 1263 that Colin of Kintail, Chief of the Clan Mackenzie saved King Alexander III from a charging stag. The King awarded the Mackenzie Clan with the right to use the 12-pointed Royal Stag emblem on their coat of arms.
